NOTES DataBase Editor

Before discussing how the DataBase Editor works, we will show the basic concepts of the Notes DataBase itself.

NOTES DATABASE

Why use the Notes DataBase?
There are several reasons why one would choose to use the DataBase capabilities of TurboView. Below is a list of common reasons to use the DataBase.

Notes DataBase Editor
The Notes DataBase Editor can be called up from the main TurboView FILE menu. Then choose "Notes DataBase Functions". Then pick the "Search/Edit & Load From DataBase". From within the DataBase Editor you can do a variety of things. To see a simplified explanation of this, click here.

SEARCH THE NOTES DATABASE
You can search the database on any field. First decide what field you want to search on, then type in the text you wish to find in the database records. For example: If you wanted to find all records that have "HOUSE" as the CATEGORY field, you could type in HOU in the CATEGORY field, then click SEARCH button. This would find every record that start with HOU in the CATEGORY field. So it would find HOUSE and HOUSTON. If what you want to search for doesn't START with HOU then it won't find it.

If you want to search for "PAM" anywhere in the keywords field, then you would type in ~PAM This would look for PAM anywhere in that field. So it would find PAM and PAMELA and SPAM and PB_PAM and PENT_PAM etc....

If you didn't know which field contains the text string to search for, then use the @ character. So, even if you enter @PAM in the CATEGORY field, it will look for PAM in ALL fields and in any place in those fields. The exception is the FILENAME field. The FILENAME field is NOT looked at when doing the @ operations.

NOTE: You can limit which records in the DataBase records are searched. You can search all records that are NOT deleted. Or you can search ALL records whether or not they are marked as deleted. And finally you can get ALL deleted records.

NOTE: If you enter search criteria in more than one field then ALL fields that have search data must match before it finds the file. IE: This is used to narrow the search.

FOUND FILES PANEL

Once the search is completed, then any files in the database that matched the search criteria will be placed into a list in the FOUND FILES PANEL. These files can then be added to the TurboView FILES LIST. They can also be marked as deleted or un-deleted. If you don't want to take ALL of the files found, you can checkmark (tag) individual files. Then these tagged files can be marked as deleted or un-deleted or added to the TurboView FILES LIST, by clicking the appropriate button.

VIEWING WITH DATABASE RECORD EDITOR
There are buttons in the DataBase Editor that look like VCR buttons that take you to the NEXT record, PREVIOUS record, FIRST record and LAST record. You can also type in a record # to jump to. The DataBase Record Editor Panel shows all of the information about the file record. You can mark the record as deleted or not. You can also elect to put the file into the FILES LIST.

In addition, a nice little preview is shown for your file's record. If it's an animated GIf file, then click on the CAMERA button to play the animation. If you double click on the preview, then a LARGE PREVIEW window is opened up with the image.

NOTE: If you have results in the FOUND FILES PANEL, then you can also double click on the filename and a LARGE PREVIEW window is opened up with the image. You can also just press RETURN/ENTER on the filename and the LARGE PREVIEW window will be displayed.

KEEP TRACK OF FAVORITE GIF ANIMATIONS FOR WEB PAGE CREATION
When doing Web Page development you commonly use animated GIF files to represent an email box or other animations. These GIFs sometimes are not all in the same folder. They could be spread out all over your system. Using the Notes DataBase you could assign these files a CATEGORY of "GIF MOVIES". You could then go into the DataBase Editor and search for all files with a CATEGORY of "GIFMOVIES" and then poof, all your GIF animations will appear in a list of found files. You can then take these files and put them into your FILES LIST with the click of a button.

CATEGORIZE YOUR IMAGES FOR QUICK RETRIEVAL LATER ON

You could assign a CATEGORY to all of your pictures that deal with women as "WOMEN" and all pictures of houses as "HOUSES" and all pictures of jokes as "JOKES". You could then assign a SUB-CATEGORY to all pictures of blonde women as "BLONDES" and all houses that are brick as "BRICK" and all jokes that are adult in humor as "ADULT". Then later on you could SEARCH the Notes DataBase for a CATEGORY of WOMEN and a SUB-CATEGORY of BLONDES and then all of those images will appear in a list of matches.

ASSIGNING SORTING NUMBERS TO CONTROL SORT ORDER

Let's say that you have a specific group of files that you want to do a slide show on. And let's say that you DON'T want to display the files in the slide show in alphabetical order. In this case you could assign a NUMBER VALUE to each of these files. Then elect to have the VALUE field of the database to be displayed in the DB FIELD in the Files List Window. Then SORT by the DB Field in the Files List Window. Then you can do your slide show in the order that you wanted :) To see how to indicate which database field appears in the Files List DB FIELD, click here.

KEEPING TRACK OF NOTES IN DATABASE

Whenever you scan a bunch of images sometimes you scan the SAME image several times with different settings. Like some are scanned with a higher resolution or maybe scanned with different color settings (256 vs 16M). Anyway you may have several images that are the same thing. You may have called them DOG001.BMP, DOG002.BMP, DOG003.BMP. In which case the NAME of the file is NOT descriptive enough to know how that particular file was scanned. By putting notes into the DataBase about each file, you can quickly see the pertinent information about each file. Scroll down through the database until you see the file with the proper notes that you want to look for.

ASSIGNING KEYWORDS TO FILES IN DATABASE

Just like you can use the CATEGORY field and the SUB-CATEGORY field to find files that you want, you can use the KEYWORDS field to find files. For example: you could put in several words into the field, like :BLONDE BABE SWIMSUIT or maybe just BLONDE BABE.

Then later on you could search for keywords of BLONDE BABE then all of the blonde babes would show up in the found list. If you searched for BLONDE BABE SWIMSUIT, then all of the blonde babes that were wearing swimsuits would show up in the list. This is very handy for doing searches for particular file groups.
